When you're considering which nines to play and how to play them, remember that the South Nine is the prettiest, the North is the toughest, and the West is everyone's favorite. This review features photos of the South and North nines. With 5 sets of tees the South plays to 3376, 3232, 3051, 2793 and 2473 yards. The North is the longest nine as it measures 3583, 3406, 3253, 3023 and 2463 yards. The West offers tee boxes that play to 3509, 3366, 3209, 2892 and 2488 yards. The slope ratings vary from 135 to 119 dependent upon the choice of tees and the 18-hole layout.
The 18,000 square-foot clubhouse features a well stocked pro shop, The Royal Oaks restaurant, a beautiful view of 9th green of the North Course, and banquet facilities with space for 240. There also are locker rooms with showers for members and guests. Practice Facilities are comprehensive and include a double-ended driving range with a private end for members and golfers who are playing that day and another set of stations for public practice, a putting green, and practice bunker that allows you to hit fairway bunker shots.
Each golf cart used at Sand Barrens has a state-of-the-art GPS tracking system, providing golfers with course layout, yardage, pace of play, shot measurements and play advice. There are 150 yard stakes situated in the fairways of all par fours and fives, and rear cart covers are also standard, protecting golf bags and clubs from inclement weather. It won't protect golfers from the more than 100 acres of sand however, that are combined into fairway and greenside bunkers and also prevalent in sweeping waste areas. Uniquely, several of the fairway traps are doubly penal - with huge trees sitting right in front, discouraging players from trying to achieve too much on recovery shots.
In total (along the 27 holes) there are 121 sand bunkers/waste areas, and water hazards come into play on 6 of the holes. The manicured putting surfaces are huge, with slopes and subtle breaks the run true and are a joy to play on. Golfers will have to carry sand waste bunkers on numerous holes, but will often find ample landing zones off the tee on most of the tree lined fairways. There are some gentle doglegs, but nothing "tricked up" about this outstanding design.
